Cozy Goldfish All Winter

After several years of a bad winter and losing our goldfish after the pond froze over, I bought two of these 300 watt heaters and an Inkbird 360 controller. We have a 450 gallon container pond in the ground. Last winter, when temperatures were in the tens and single digits, the temperature in our pond stayed between 60 and 64 degrees. I'm going to upgrade one of the heaters to 500 watts, which makes 800 watts. The controller can handle 1200 watts, but I also use two submersible pumps and I don't want the total power to exceed 1200 watts with an extension to the pond. I recently turned off the heaters while clearing out the pond for the winter and doing a 40% water change. The heaters worked perfectly. For the winter I lower the operating temp to 60, but I can go as low as 40 - I wouldn't go any lower to keep ice from forming. I think this is our best way to keep our little fish happy all winter. If you have a dedicated circuit for your pond I would run two 500 watt heaters, larger heaters tend to run less because they heat up faster. I only use a 1 degree range due to the specific heat of water - it takes a lot of energy to heat the water 1 degree, and a larger range increases the amount of energy to heat the water by say 4 or 5 degrees after it cools is.
