Waste of money these days for modern cars

I used to be a big fan of K&N filters. They worked very well with carbureted cars. I have one on my 1986 Camaro Z28. A VERY noticeable increase in performance. HOWEVER: I have a 2015 Silverado 2500 with a 6.6L Duramax engine that I bought a filter for. Before installing the filter, I also thoroughly cleaned my Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. There were no noticeable changes in fuel economy or performance in daily driving or towing/hauling. I monitor both the default dashboard metrics and my Edge Insight Readout metrics. The only thing he added was a slight increase in noise in the engine compartment. Nowadays I think standard technology is enough to justify paper filters. One thing you should also be conscientious of is your car's MAF sensor. These filters are impregnated with oil. If you don't check your mass air flow sensor regularly after installation, they will blow the oil back onto the sensor and contaminate it. This results in rougher idling, poor performance, poor acceleration and poor fuel economy. I think it's not that big of a problem as the filter ages and oil residue goes away. However, every time you lubricate the filter it is a very real problem that you must control. First off, it sounds good that these filters come with a lifetime warranty. But actually I think you are better off with paper filters for the reasons above. I have also used a K&N cold air intake system on my 2013 Silverado 1500 LT with no results either. However, it beefed up the engine bay a bit compared to the stock plastic. I think it's another point in my opinion that I don't think these systems offer any advantage over standard systems in today's modern car. With that said, could it just be GM Trucks? Study your specific vehicle. Anyway, just my honest two cents here.
