It is powered by the SATA cable power connector, which guarantees support for the highest USB speeds. - The logic board has a female USB connector, this end of the cable is NOT soldered. Which is very nice. I've already used the same type of cable connected to the motherboard USB3 connector, but this is a 2-cable splitter. So I used mine. I only had to buy a short USB AA cable (both ends male) to connect my splitter to this reader. Because my cable has both ends with sockets. Works perfectly. I haven't actually measured the read/write speeds, but all transfers are fast as they should be with USB3.
