It will do the job, but hardly. Discard the plastic tripod first. You can find quality tripods for less than $20. Optics is another area that suffers badly. Even at only 50 yards, finding the first or second hole in a .556 is extremely difficult. Once you finish 2 or 3 holes you can see them a little better. If I were to buy another spotting scope I would save a little more money and buy one with better optics. It's very difficult to see a hole on a target with a black silhouette. Once there are 3 or 4 more holes in the target, it will be easier to find the scope. A scope with this power range should be able to easily detect shot after shot at only 50 meters. I never like dropping a product but if you plan on using this as a spotter sight I would seriously recommend saving some extra money for a better optic. For bird watching or similar it will probably be fine. It's just not good for long ranges. TO UPDATE. I swapped my tripod for a much better one. I am sorry. Don't rely on it to locate a target at 50 yards.
