As a new artist I bought a set of 48 pieces. With more experience, I was able to mix more of my own colors, but I didn't want to get too excited. I tried about 12 colors and was satisfied. Burnt sienna is a bit thick, but very healthy. I strongly recommend that beginners who purchase this set also purchase a large tube of Titanium White. I've taken 3-4 pictures so far and I'm already out of the white. Titanium White is often used to dilute other colors and runs out very quickly, so do yourself a favor and order an extra tube of this color with this set. Also, I would suggest buying a bottle of white Liquitex Basics Gesso or something similar. I first noticed that my canvas took a lot of paint and that Gesso is a product used as a primer for canvas. It's inexpensive and reduces the amount of paint I had to use to get a good finish.
