No instructions but there are many tutorials on youtube easy to assemble after watch. The trunk lay lightly and firmly on the car. We removed the kayaks and the rack was very sturdy. We purchased extra bow and stern ropes to attach to the front and rear of the vehicle. Everyone I've spoken to has suggested this, and I think it's a good idea too. Someone said that the straps that come with the kit are not very good. I don't think they're the best, but so far they're doing the job. One of them started to come off at the end but after I lit it with a lighter it was fine again. Overall this is a good all round rack, especially for the price. I gave 4 stars instead of 5 because I don't like the look of it when the shelves are empty - wish they folded but overall I'm satisfied after 1 try.
