As a gift for this year's holiday, I calculated the prices for Dobsonian and Newtonian reflectors and decided on the Celestron 114EQ. I was very interested in astronomy when I was younger and my ultimate goal is to get into astrophotography. This telescope was easy to assemble, the tripod was strong enough to support the weight of the equatorial mount and counterweights, and the slow motion controls worked reasonably well. The only complaint I have is the length of the rail that the viewfinder attaches to - it's about two inches too short to properly align the viewfinder with the target, so I'm reaching out to 3D printer friends to make a modified part . I would also advise anyone buying this model to be prepared to buy additional eyepieces - 10mm and 20mm are good but have their limitations.
