Good telescope for beginners

Finder is great for finding objects. Haven't found any deep sky objects yet, but I live in a suburb with a lot of light pollution (but Andromeda isn't over the horizon where I live at this time of year), but observing planets through a telescope for the first time is cool. Here are photos I took with a DSLR attached to a telescope of Saturn, Jupiter and its moons, and the moon.

Terrible quality: attractive paperweight

We've been trying to get the visor working for 2 months now. The laser star finder does not adjust well enough and drains its batteries on a daily basis. Even if I adjust the scope manually, it doesn't collimate. I've had masterful astronomers try to make it work and despite their attempts it's now just an attractive paperweight as all the effort resulted in me missing the return window. Depressing and financially wasted effort.

Telescope for beginners

I got this as a Christmas present for my grandson in 2018. His father assembled it fairly easily and got it ready for viewing that evening. Of course, then the clouds came up and we had to postpone it. I would like motor drive and computer control but that would make the cost a little prohibitive. That's good for the first impression. It's the same brand as my 8 inch lens so I was confident in its quality. I also picked up an eyepiece and they seem generally happy with it.

Pros
  • Excellent overall performance

  • Reliability

Perfect for beginners, amazing clarity

Please see the pictures I've attached; I think they will give you the best part of the review. They were taken when my old phone was pressed against the eyepiece. Great pictures didn't require expensive equipment. I had never used a telescope before and didn't know what features I needed, but this one was on the astrophysicist's short list of recommendations. It took a bit of patience to put together and get to know the settings at first, but now I grab this thing and carry it around whenever…

Good price in the binoculars and spotting scopes category

As a gift for this year's holiday, I calculated the prices for Dobsonian and Newtonian reflectors and decided on the Celestron 114EQ. I was very interested in astronomy when I was younger and my ultimate goal is to get into astrophotography. This telescope was easy to assemble, the tripod was strong enough to support the weight of the equatorial mount and counterweights, and the slow motion controls worked reasonably well. The only complaint I have is the length of the rail that the viewfinder…

Pros
  • Suitable for many people
Cons
  • For pensioners

To be honest, I only got this telescope yesterday. But it was easy to assemble. To set it up, you'll need to watch a few YouTube videos to actually use it. The instruction manual was in 5/6 different languages but the photos were very small and didn't always show exactly how everything should go and in which direction. However, there are videos you can watch that will help you if you are new to this. She came in several boxes, like a Russian nesting doll. But it was definitely safe when it was…

Not very impressive

Good build quality. Good looks and features and very easy to use. The laser finder doesn't turn off very well or even indicate that it's working, but that's my fault. The problem is that this is just a "regular telescope" so don't expect to see the most amazing things in the sky. I saw Jupiter, our largest planet, and all I could tell was that it was a perfectly spherical white dot, not a randomly shaped "starburst" white dot. You can't really see any details, only dots. Like every telescope…

Very important! Although with some design flaws

First of all we note that this is not a classic Newtonian reflector. This is a Bird Jones reflector that uses a spherical mirror instead of a parabolic one and has a corrector + 2x Barlow under the focus tube. At the same time, it is inherently difficult to aim lasers, but its design allows it to be so compact. With a classic Newtonian lens, it would have been almost twice as long. The quality of the image is pretty high, make sure you collimate it before using it. Collimation can only be done…

Good quality telescope, but frustrating for keen beginners

Note: This is a Bird Jones telescope, not a classic Newtonian. Basically, it must be collimated before each use. Without collimation, the image quality will certainly be unsatisfactory. Due to improper manufacturing of the end piece, the viewfinder cannot be aligned correctly. This is not a problem with the red dot finder, since I bought a better red dot finder that cannot be adjusted either. I'm not sure if this is an issue in my specific case or if it's a general design flaw. The included…
