Installation not quite as stated by Oatey

I have an Oatey copper roof with a factory installed rubber grommet. The factory seal is pressed into a groove around the entire perimeter of the apron. About 20 years have passed and in some places parts of this seal are missing. You'd think since copper parts for roofs are made to last over 50 years, Oatey would have a design that would allow for gasket replacement, as no rubber ever lasts that long. (My roof doesn't leak thanks to a rubber ice/water barrier under the shingles mounted on plywood and glued to the pipe.) I spoke to Oatey customer service before purchasing this product. I asked if I should remove the old gasket before installing this new one. It made sense to me, especially since parts of my old poetry are missing. Oati said 'no' that for a proper install you just need to use 100% silicone, press it down and attach to the old gasket. I took notes and ordered this part as the one recommended for my pipe caulking. However, when I received and inspected it, I saw that this gasket has a groove that goes into a hole in the gasket on one side. and the other side runs along the edge around the hole in the grade. That said, in order for this new part to fit snugly and properly into the silicone strip, I would have to completely remove the old rubber gasket from the seal. If you leave the old gasket in place, as Oati recommended, the new one will stick out a lot and won't close the hole.
