I usually use a grooving cutter but there are some uses such as: B. Lap joints best done with a grooving head. The Freud 508 set is cheaper than Forrest's Dado King but got a good review from Fine Woodworking so I ordered it. It's been a few years since I've used a dado set and now I know why - setting it up is a little tedious. But. I once tried to make a lap joint on a router and had to interrupt the work by going to the emergency room to get a few stitches. To reacquaint myself with the dado sets, I made some cuts 3/4" wide and 1/4" deep with the Freud set in scrap walnut, melamine faced chipboard, and cherry plywood. The cuts were perfectly even, with a perfectly straight profile and no cracks at the exit. It is very impressive that it can handle such different materials. The set comes in a plastic case with very thin plastic spacers to separate the choppers and knives. I don't think they will hold up very well, but they will be easy enough to replace. Behind the foam on the top of the case is a helpful DVD and a diagram showing how to combine knives and choppers for different widths. This is one of several Freud-Dado sets. Less expensive kits use choppers with two pairs of knives instead of four, which can result in less smooth cuts. The next step (SD608) uses a device that offers an extra width - 7/32 inch - and uses an adjustable insert to eliminate the need for shims and reduce shredding from paper shredders. What do you have to do to replace them? But if you don't need to change widths frequently during each session, this set (SD508) makes a good choice. It will definitely give you a good range of widths and clean, precise cuts.
