Spend your $10 on a better thermometer

I only need a thermometer to check the temperature of the water in my coffee pot. I chose it for its length and a number of reviews that suggest its accuracy. When this thermometer was immersed in literally boiling water (at sea level) it displayed the following readings at 1 second intervals AFTER it was turned on and took about 5 seconds to register: 86.5 C48.2 C-17.3 C-35.3 C96.7 C99.8 C99. 7C76.9C98.9C86.4C98.5C47.3C63.6C98.6C98.5C98.1c So not only is this inaccurate to never register a single reading at 100°C or higher while in boiling water, the readings will fluctuate also strong over time . I'll go with a non-digital thermometer. I'm old enough to know that you get what you pay for, but I didn't realize that a thermometer can be totally inadequate for something as simple as checking hot water temperature. --- Just a few days later I continued trying to use this thermometer in hopes that I could figure out how to correctly interpret the readings. Now they are even more unstable. Today they were so inconsistent that the readings (which NEVER reached 100°C in boiling water) went up and down so much that I couldn't even see the trend. Sometimes in the high 90's, then right into the 70's, then into the 80's and back into the 90's (with a few negative readings thrown in here and there).
