This tool screws into the end of the cartridge shaft and provides a secure connection for pulling. BUT the female part is too small to enclose the cartridge and engage the valve body. My valve body is not bolted to any supporting structure. The only thing holding it in place are the 3 inch copper tubing. I bought this tool because I didn't want to pull on the pipes. I was expecting this tool to push the case as I pull out the cartridge. But it won't. Luckily mine came out pretty easily. I suppose I could pull mine out just as easily by threading a small washer onto the end of the shaft and pulling with pliers. But the tool pulled the cartridge and I have a shiny new tool in my toolbox, so no complaints.
