Dial gauge works great. Very handy for sorting your collection of unmarked twin needles that have fallen out of their case in your desk drawer. Your needle size is the smallest hole that the needle will fit (may be tight, but don't force it). The stitch sensor works by moving the guide so that the insides of the caliper are separated by 10 stitches or rows. Then read the size indicated in the manual. Stitch gauge is a good idea, but I think the problem is that 10 stitches or rows might be too small to measure to get an accurate size for measurement sensitive projects. You are better off just knitting 24x24 pattern and measuring 20 stitches or rows. Either that, or use this device to measure and average several different locations on the sample?
