It is very difficult for a programmer to be productive with a single screen. I work remotely and always take my laptop with me when I travel, but I'm concerned about the drop in performance compared to my typical home dual-monitor configuration. Cocopar changed everything for me and their portable monitors are one of the best things I've found at Revain. I originally bought two 15 inch monitors and they worked great with my MacBook Pro. What I really like about the monitors is that they come with USB-C ports, which means I can connect them to my Mac, and they work without any additional power cords. Also, they're as thin as an iPad, so two of them fit comfortably in a backpack along with a Mac. I love these things so much that I gave my original 15" monitors to a family member (also a programmer) and bought two new 17" Cocopar monitors to have extra screen real estate. I can't recommend them enough!
