Review on Optimized Installation Mortiser Template - Ryobi A99HT3 by John Collins

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Easy to use, works well, great price.

I just bought this tool to fix a protruding interior door. I took the door off, removed the hinges, cut the door about 3/32" off and reinstalled the hinges. It worked like clockwork. I tested it on a 2x4 piece first to get a feel for it, and haven't even read the instructions, although I did watch a video review showing how to use it.The depth setting is accurate, the included cutter works well and gives a nice clean cut, and the jig overall is strong enough for mine Purposes Once the jig is in place it only takes a minute or two to mill a new groove Very fast all cuts were very clean no problem A few things I noticed: - I have one Makita cutter and the 3" base is a bit small for this jig - there were a few spots where it didn't overlap the template completely and can wobble if careless. I solved this problem by i I made a 4x4 base out of scrap Lexan I had on hand. This ensured the router was securely fixed 100% of the cut. The template didn't fit perfectly evenly on the hinge side of the door. The fastener had a slight (maybe 1/16 inch) slight "play" (meaning a slight gap over the edge of the door) although the clip was firmly in place. Just make sure to put some downward pressure on the router so the template flattens to the edge of the door and the depth comes out perfectly even. Also, the template had no play, the clip held it perfectly (didn't slip around the edge of the door or anything). scratches) my advice would be to first tighten the hinges using the old screw holes, mark the locations of the hinges and adjust the bracket accordingly, then mill the new grooves. You don't have to drill new screw holes, and hand tightening will show exactly where the hinge sits (because the screws are self-centering in the hinge plate holes). In general - easy to use, contains everything you need to work. , ran like clockwork. At $30 including a template drill and a self-centering drill (if you need one), this is great value. Seems strong enough for the average handyman.
