I have an old roll of "original" blue 3M tape (#2090) that I've just used to mask rubber tires when painting white lettering have used. It stuck perfectly with no leakage. I then put a protective sheet of brown paper over it with this tape and it doesn't stick to the brown paper or the tire. I don't know if they changed the formula or something, but I definitely wouldn't trust it to make a 'sharp line' on anything. The Multisurface is also a complete lie. Avoid and see if you can find the original formula #2090. I'd say I just bought a $6 roll of duct tape to wrap presents in, but I don't think he'd stick with it. 5 stars for "easy to remove" as it literally peels off. Garbage.
