I found it absolutely necessary to mount my Honeywell RTH9580WF 7 Day Smart Wi-Fi Touch Thermostat powered by Revain Alexa on a wall covering the holes from the previous three had (large) thermostats. The package included medium and large pads and a metal base plate. I screwed a metal base plate to a wooden stud centered conveniently behind my old mounting pad. There are protrusions on the front of the lining. They might have fit in a different model of thermostat, but my Honeywell 9580WiFi rocked unstable because of them, so I cut them off with a label scraper. They're just soft plastic, they fit right away. see drawing. I attached the metal base to the wood post with a couple of 1 1/4" pan head screws; routed the control wires through the center hole; I was then able to hold the thermostat base over the cover and use the included 6x32 tool. Screws to thread into the metal base's threaded tabs This made a strong connection. One of the holes is oblong which makes it easier to line up the bracket. Then I connected the cables. These pads are a "recommended" purchase with small Honeywell Wifi thermostats.
