I searched and found another 8-port USB hub. I originally bought a Kingwin which worked great but this one comes with Quick Charge 3.0 for newer phones and sold me. So far it works great with my iMac and with good speed. Minor flaw: only comes with a 3 amp power supply. For most people this will be enough unless you charge the ports with USB powered hard drives (0.5 amp each) *and* charge your phone with a fast charge port (2 amp), which I really need to do sometimes. . This unit should come with a 5 amp adapter which Kingwin have fitted them with. Luckily I was able to change the adapters and now I'm fine. Of course I'm an extreme case. Another issue is that this product strangely uses a USB-A port as its input port instead of the standard USB-B. That means if you lose the included cable, you can throw the thing away because nobody sells a USB-A to USB-A cable (which isn't even supposed to exist). Without those quibbles, it would have gotten five stars.
