Works seamlessly with several powerful devices

tl;dr - if you have external hard drives that turn off from time to time and your operating system reports that the device is tightening lots of power, this hub should solve the problem. My old D-Link DUB-H7 USB 2.0 High Speed 7-Port Hub (original blue/grey version) no longer supplies enough power for my new external hard drives, the Western Digital My Passport Essential SE. 1TB USB 3.0 Portable External Hard Drive (Black) . I've been looking at what's changed in the USB specification and here's the important note: Standard current tolerances: USB 2.0 devices are allowed to use up to 500mA per port. USB 3.0 devices are allowed up to 900mA per port. Two new "special connectors" were defined in USB 3.0/Battery Spec 1.2: USB DCP - a dedicated charging connector - supplies up to 5 A but prevents data transfer. USB CDP - Charge Out Port - Delivers up to 1.5A and data at the same time. This hub provides the 900mA per port that my hard drives require and I now have three drives operating without a "device drawing too much current" error message. With USB 3.0 <-> 2.0 compatibility, my host computer has USB 2.0 and connects to a 3.0 hub and 3.0 devices (obviously speed capped at 2.0 speed but that's ok, that's the performance that I needed). Note: I looked again at DUB-H7 and there is a new version (all black) with symbols on it indicating that the two rightmost connectors could be CDP connectors. If I only had two drives this hub would probably work just as well, but for the future I've decided to go with USB 3.0.

Pros
  • Backwards compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1
Cons
  • Cable is shorter than other options
