Review on πŸ”§ Cox 41004 XT Chilton 10 3 oz Cartridge by Richard Simmons

Very strong when you're tough

This is the first 'unusual' caulking gun I've owned. After I broke my second stamped six-dollar steel gun, I decided to go broke. In general I like this applicator, but there are some disadvantages. The biggest plus is also a minus: this cartridge gun is built very solidly. All parts of the grip appear to be molded rather than stamped, and the only plastic on the entire product is the "Flow Control" switch, a small tab that lets you choose to lock the stock in place after each actuation, or gently want to withdraw to provide drip-free functionality (this is not shown in the Revain product image but I had one). The downside to this rugged design is that the product is heavy, probably two or three times the weight of a typical stamped steel caulking gun. It may be hard on your wrist when holding it with one hand. Control is excellent and the pressure is a huge advantage when pumping more viscous materials like underbody glue or Lexel sealant. I don't find the extra leverage to be a problem with easy flowing products like Dap Alex Plus, you just need to slow down the speed at which you pump it. Overall, the controls on this weapon are extremely responsive. There is a lanyard attachment point which is great for roofing work. The weapon doesn't have a button to open sealed containers, so don't throw away that very long nail and don't use it just yet. Don't forget your knife, there's no built-in pipe cutter either. Mine was marked "Made in Michigan" according to the Cox website, all of their products are made in their own facility or factory in England. Overall I would highly recommend this if you value control over everything else and need the power to flow very thick stuff. If you work with expensive or hard-to-clean products, this gun is probably the perfect choice for you; I have found that the extra control reduces waste significantly. If you're primarily using very light sealers for painting projects, this gun is good, but definitely over the top. I would suggest you go with a lighter, cheaper product like Cox 41001 and live with the possibility of it breaking every few years.
