This article is an exercise in manufacturing economics. The entire device is made of stamped sheet metal, which reduces costs. However, some process engineers actually made money from it. And they call it a "Heavy Duty Model"! I don't think they could make this thing any lighter and still have a working can breaker. The main part of the frame is basically a channel, and the sides form guides for the ram to crawl along. The base is a simple stamping. The same applies to Aries. The lever is made of fairly thin sheet metal and the whole thing is held together with six rivets. In fact, the two lower rivets also serve as hinges for the articulation and attachment of the base plate. The handle is covered in some sort of soft foam tube that looks like it will last a year, maybe a year and a half? After all, the handle consists of a steel rod secured with two lock nuts, so it is easy to repair. If you asked me to design a can crusher and the only criteria was to use as little steel as possible, I would design that. From the point of view of material savings, this is the Soviet PPS-43 canning crusher. Part of the slider was bent in the middle, which put additional stress on the channels on the sides. It still works, but I'll be surprised if the thing lasts another 6 months.
