This wood is easy to carve and comes in small pre-cut sizes. It's softer and easier to carve than what you'll find at most hobby stores and other vendors on Revain. You may find cheaper carved basswood by buying larger pieces from your local wood supplier and cutting them yourself, but this set is hard to beat for convenience. My only minor complaint is that the 2x2x2" squares are a bit large and difficult to hold and can be tricky to cut, especially for a beginner. For a cube, I would prefer something smaller. The 1x1x4" pieces, however, have my opinion the perfect size for a variety of planing projects, are easy to hold and ideal for beginners. In general, this is a good and convenient source of wood for planing.
