
I'm an avid hiker (search and rescue) and ex-military sniper so I'm good with optics. I was looking for something to carry around in the woods that was lighter and less bulky than my small binoculars. Before buying the Vortex Solo I had a Brunton Echo Pocket Scope monocular with me, very small and light but no magnification and the image quality is relatively poor. I bought a Solo to fill the gap between my high-end binoculars and my pocket scope. The Solo is extremely durable (although it doesn't have a lens cap) and feels solid (not to mention its weight). The optics are not adjustable, but offer a very clear field of view. The carrying case is a bit open to the elements (as mentioned by other reviewers) but other than that the glass parts may have some scratches from dirt etc its. In addition, the Solo features a strong removable metal clip (probably accounting for 30% of the product weight!). Overall, this is a quality optic, especially for the price. I would have preferred a little smaller and lighter, but I haven't seen anything that lives up to that on the market for quality/affordability.
