This year I started brewing my own beer and cider and started with a hydrometer. While I've had good results with an hydrometer, I learned about refractometers and ordered this one. I haven't touched my areometer since then. It only takes a few drops to get a reading, not 8 ounces in my hydrometer vial. This tool makes it very easy to take samples with less cleanup and less waste. I like that this refractometer displays both specific gravity and Brix values. It was very easy to calibrate with a few drops of distilled water and the included screwdriver and eyedropper. The case isn't meant to be heavy duty, but when not in use it sits on a shelf in my brew room and I love that it's lined with foam to protect the tooling inside. All in all a great purchase and a must have for any DIY enthusiast!
