Inaccurate information about home brewing.

Bought to measure the specific gravity of my home made beer. It showed 1.035 for three different beers, which when checked with a hydrometer was about 1.015. My block is clearly defective. I thought I had a fermentation stuck, but this device just isn't accurate. Maybe I just misunderstood. We will be back as soon as possible.

Excellent tool for refractometers

I use it in making cider. This is a lot easier than using a hydrometer and a lot less wasteful on your cider as only 2-3 drops are needed. The instructions were ok but it took a while to get used to the size. The same is true for reading the Specific Gravity/Brix scale, although using a brighter light source helps. Come with a nice case. The refractometer is very durable but needs to be handled with care as it is an optical device. I've wanted to buy one for a long time.

Pros
  • Useful not only for its intended purpose
Cons
  • Some little things

Really cool gadget in refractometers

I was surprised how easy it is. I got it to measure gravity at home and compared the readings using a standard hydrometer/cylinder/math method; the results were either identical or differed within 0.001 while the refractometer readings were slightly lower. For what I do, the ease of use of this thing is worth it. It only takes a few drops and here is your measurement. It's also very easy to calibrate, the instructions are clear and easy to follow, and it comes in a decent carrying case.

Pros
  • Easy to read control panel
Cons
  • Easily torn

Totally inaccurate

I bought this thinking it would be easier and quicker than pulling out a hydrometer and test jar. I tried using this 3 times and each time gave inaccurate readings. Calibrated according to instructions before first use. I tried recalibrating it with no improvement. I took a reading with him today that was 0.030 off. I think that's a long way. I had high hopes for this and was dying to get the same for making syrup. Not now, I'll save my money and suggest you do the same.

Pros
  • Brilliantly made
Cons
  • Compatibility

Easy to use for refractometer

This refractometer is really easy to use. I've never used it, but the instructions that come with it are clear and helpful. I'm still new to the science of brewing. So I thought using a refractometer would be difficult, but it isn't. The counter is very clear and easy to read. The instructions show how the refractometer can be recalibrated if necessary. It looks easy. Enough to do but as it is already calibrated it was accurate when I used it. However, I can see that it will last a long time…

A must-have addition to your brewery arsenal! Also a lot.

I only used this refractometer for one batch of beer, but I can't imagine life without it. I was able to quickly and accurately assess the wort density at each stage, including monitoring the washed wort every 5 minutes. Only a few drops of spice are required for a clear result. The only thing I don't like is the slight twisting of the eyepiece, which can get a little blurry over time. I highly recommend this product, especially for the price you can find at Revain. A must for every handyman!

This year I started brewing my own beer and cider and started with a hydrometer. While I've had good results with an hydrometer, I learned about refractometers and ordered this one. I haven't touched my areometer since then. It only takes a few drops to get a reading, not 8 ounces in my hydrometer vial. This tool makes it very easy to take samples with less cleanup and less waste. I like that this refractometer displays both specific gravity and Brix values. It was very easy to calibrate with a

Cheaply made - Refractometer

I am a house winegrower and have owned a similar one for many years. The old one broke when I accidentally dropped it. I bought this as a replacement and found it cheap with poorly made parts. It has a very loose focusing mechanism, causing the scale to blur at the slightest touch. It works, but there are probably better refractometers out there. Keep looking - this is not what you need. Update: The supplier of this refractometer is really top notch. They saw my review and 100% refunded my…
