Reliable drives with great value

As of Spring 2018, the Seagate Exos 7E8 ST8000NM0055 8TB drives offer the best value in terms of price per TB and features, despite the 10TB -Version not much lagging behind. on the price front. I've compared this enterprise-class drive against both Seagate's consumer line-ups (Barracuda Pro/Ironwolf/Ironwolf Pro) and competing brand offerings (HGST and WD) and this drive is attractive in a number of ways: 1) It has the largest cache memory - 256 MB. while many competitors only offer 128MB cache on similar drives both in terms of annual write load (500TB vs 300TB) and MTF (2M vs 1M) 4) Being an enterprise hard drive, is It is designed for continuous workloads and is suitable for high-vibration environments such as B. Server Racks5) Unlike many consumer drives, these drives come with a full 5-year warranty (more on that later). However, there are a few (not many) downsides: 1) This drive is a bit noisy. All of my drives have SN04 firmware installed, which fixes many of the noise complaints, clicking noises, etc. reported here that are present on the same drives with earlier firmware. But this drive is still louder than many consumer drives, especially those designed for lower RPMs. It might sound a bit disconcerting, but none of my drive diagnostics turned up any problems, and they didn't get much louder to bother me next to my desk. 2) These discs seem to get a little warm. I suspect they should get a little warm anyway, since they're designed for enterprise data center environments, but I'd still recommend more powerful cooling solutions. I've replaced the stock fans in my cases with higher quality Noctua fans and so far they seem happy. Overall I'm very happy with these drives and 8 of them are running on 2 separate arrays with no issues. They are fast, reliable (so far) and appear to be very reliable. Finally, in terms of warranties, there are reports of some third parties selling OEM hard drives that may have been pulled from actual server blocks and therefore don't come with valid Seagate warranties. While it's true that these drives are typically OEM drives, Seagate sells OEM drives with valid end-user warranties that are serviced directly by Seagate. Just because they're OEM doesn't mean they don't have a warranty. It all depends on the seller and where he bought his products. I received all 8 of my drives through SaberPC and they told me all of their new drives are under warranty. All hard drive serial numbers were verified on the Seagate website as having a valid 5 year warranty when I received them. On the plus side, SaberPC tends to be the cheapest price point. So I have nothing to complain about in this regard. Their support team is also very responsive when you call them with questions.
