A child of mine visits an Occupational Therapist to "help with barriers that affect a person's emotional, social, and physical needs." One of those obstacles was attention and time management, and one of the recommended tools was a visual timer like this one. Its purpose is to tick very softly to offer little stimulation and also to establish a small rhythm that helps the person focus. there is plenty of time left for the task (usually it took no more than 2 minutes for a small child I knew - and the duration increased as the child was better at sustaining attention). A digital countdown timer isn't going to help as young children don't yet have the same sense of time as adults when they see numbers falling to zero. Did it help the child? Yes and no. At first, this was pleasant news for him, and he has done well. He later began to lose focus again, but with the help of weekly therapy, his therapist was able to get him to focus for extended periods of time without intervention. Now he can sit down and finish his 10-minute job with a treat to enjoy later: playing in the kitchen (yes, this boy loves to cook!). Can this be used as an alarm clock? Sure, but I think it's a stretch. It works better for what the therapist said it would.
