Revainrating 4 out of 5

Image quality is poor on a light background. I haven't tried the night picture.

This review refers to a digital door viewer made in China. This review is a bit long and detailed so bear with me. I received it in December 2018 and installed it two weeks after it arrived. Here are some useful measurements: My door was 1.75 inches (45mm) thick. My door was sheet aluminum on both sides, with an inner soft core that turned out to be some sort of plastic Styrofoam-like filler. The product comes with three screws of different lengths. I used the shortest. The two longer screws I didn't need (for thicker doors) are 2.5" long and 3-5/16". So, in theory, you're fine as long as your door size is between 1.5 and 3.5 inches. The diameter of the chamber shaft used is 14.3 mm (so a bore with a diameter of 15 mm is required). You will need to drill a 15mm diameter hole in your door. You can use a 5/8" drill bit, but I prefer to be precise and drill metric. Choose your size carefully so you can see the visitor's face and some of their shoulders. Aim for little people because there will be children at your door. The viewing area is small and not adjustable. Drilling the door should be done with the following considerations in mind: 1. The sheet metal of the door seems to crack easily, so the opening can be ugly if you are not careful. Use the FILE CUTTERS2. Remember that a gap is not good. Bugs can enter, water can enter the door, air or heat can escape from the air conditioner.3. It may help to use some silicone sealant inside the hole. If your gate will not be exposed to rain or snow, this step can be skipped. Do not use a conventional drill for drilling. Use the SAW CUTTER; They can be purchased from ACE Hardware (special order, ship within a week, about $8) or ordered from Revain. Examine the picture of the saw drill bit to make sure it can go through a 2" thick door. Most saw hole drill bits are too short, about 1.5 inches (about 38mm). That means you'll be on both sides of the door Find a spot to see a 5ft man's face (IMO) at the door This way you can see the top of a small child's head and still be able to see the chin of an over 1 .80m tall person. Remember, the camera does not pan up or down, only zoom is available. Place a mat under the door to catch debris that falls from the drill. Once you have chosen a location, use Use a regular 5/32" or 11/64" drill bit to drill through the door. This is the pilot hole that will be used to guide the 15mm drill bit in the next step. NOTE: IF YOUR DOOR IS 50mm THICK, YOU WILL NEED A LONG NORMAL DRILL Buy r from Ace Hardware. Most drill bits are shorter than 2 inches and will not reach the other side of the door. Once you've drilled the next step, use the hole saw drill bit to drill through the door, following the pilot hole you created in the first step. MAKE SURE YOU KEEP THE DRILL PERIODIC TO THE DOOR or you will screw up the hole. The soft core in the door does not guide the center drill well. Solid wood door performs better. After the hole saw drill reaches the end of its range from the home page, move to the other side of the door and drill from the pilot hole. Again, make sure the drill is perpendicular to the door. Check by inserting the camera into the hole and making sure it fits in the hole. Then put some silicone sealant in the hole and insert the outer block into the hole. Place the mounting plate on the opposite side (inside) of the door and tighten it with the screw. The camera tape runs through a small rectangular window in the mounting plate. ATTENTION: Adhesive hardens immediately. Once the mounting plate is glued to the door, you cannot change its position. Secure the mounting plate with a long screw of appropriate length. Do not overtighten or the camera unit may be damaged. Requires 4 AA batteries for power. We use rechargeable batteries to save the planet. The unit does NOT come with a wall adapter but I had a 5V 0.5A (500mA) adapter with a 3.74mm round rod that worked great. If you can find a way to route cables around door hinges, you don't need batteries. The power supply works perfectly. Pros: I like the option with standard AA batteries. I hate special batteries. I like the AC adapter option and don't use batteries at all. Installation was very easy and quick if you have all the necessary tools. When someone presses the doorbell, the JPG image is automatically saved to the included SD card. You see and delete the recorded image. The attached ConsImage images show the problem. The doorway is always shaded and the background is always light. The picture quality is pretty bad. Faces are barely visible, which is a big problem when a stranger knocks and you want to get a good picture. When I took out the SD card to extract some pictures, it was quite difficult to put the SD card back in. My suggestion: Don't take out the SD card frequently. The SD card holder feels a bit flimsy and is easy to break. It requires too much force to insert and this can be a problem. I was afraid of damaging the SD card writer. You cannot get images from the device using a wired connection. The only way to extract recorded images or videos is to physically remove the SD card and read it on another PC. My recommendation: if you remove the card, make sure you extract all the images and save them to your PC, as reinserting the card may cause you to lose all recorded files. At the moment I have no data on how long this will take. If this lasts less than a year, I will change my rating and the duration of the entry.
