Review on πŸ”’ Enhanced Pop & Lock PL2300 Tailgate Lock in Black: Exclusive Compatibility with Factory Steel Handle by John Langdon

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Great product with poor quality control.

I sent back the first two I received and am using the third one which is also . we call it a fad. The first two - purchased from Revain - lacked the spring that forces the latch to close. The cam of the lock opens it, allowing the handle to open the tailgate. But without the spring, the assembly will never close and will be permanently unlocked. The ones bought by Revain seemed solid in every other way. I thought Pop & Lock would probably prefer to send out a cheap nib rather than processing returns through Revain and tried to contact them but they said to go back to Revain. After getting two from Revain with a missing feather I gave them up. I also ordered the third one from Revain, but from a third party. The third had a spring, but the build quality of the shutter was not so high. In particular, the two pieces are more loosely riveted together than the ones I had from Revain. As a result, it binds about half the time it's locked and doesn't come loose until you tighten the two pieces. Luckily, I found that I could poke the cam follower with a long screwdriver or car key and get it to disengage when I wanted to lock it. It works but is a little silly. The two devices purchased from Revain came in clamshell packaging, while the third-party came in a plastic bag. I think the clamshell packaging protects the lock better during shipping. Quality control issues aside, the design is pretty good and well thought out. And there aren't many options. The lock extends the handle a little, which can cause it to slip off the scissor arm. Considering these are older cars, the tailgate handle may not work if your scissor arm is worn out. It works well enough for my truck. The instructions for the lock mention a folded latch for a better fit, but both versions obtained from Revain and a third party now have this piece secured with a welded piece of metal, so you can't perform the suggested kink. I suspect the brace is a better design and maintains the correct flex. I liked the idea of a manual lock instead of an electric one, but using their electric version might also work better as it's really a simpler design in how it works. The downside is that the power and propulsion are extra things that can go wrong. And if you like detaching the tailgate, the power cord won't work for you.
