DeWALT -- A rose by any other name would smell so sweet

I have resisted buying Dewalt tools since B&D bought the name and has stopped producing wonderful Dewalt radial arm saws. Radial cantilever saws were rightly the backbone of home and professional workshops in the second half of the 20th century. Now you should have a table saw AND a miter saw to replace them and they can't do half as much and half as good as a good Dewalt radial saw. I think B&D wanted the name to liven up B&D's shaky reputation at the time. It definitely worked. From what I've seen most, but not all, DeWALT tools are pretty good, although they tend to be overpriced compared to what you get. I bought a set of Hyper Tough sockets from you know where and was very happy with them as they were very cheap and looked great. But then I read some reviews where people claimed the ratchet failed. Without a ratchet, the set is not very good. Someone gave me a $15 gift certificate and that was enough to upgrade to the DeWALT set, which admittedly has the best reputation. DeWALT has two more heads, a longer extension and a very useful drill drive converter. It has a very good body that should be shockproof, but I have my doubts - the hinge looks a little flimsy. The standard blown case might be more durable but not as pretty. Beauty matters as I look at my car tools more than I use them - I'm more of a carpenter these days. The Hyper-Tough didn't have a body, instead it had a holder that didn't hold the ratchet very tightly. All in all I would recommend Dewalt unless you are on a budget.

Pros
  • SAE and metric socket set comes with lockable stacking cases
Cons
  • Cord is shorter than other picks
