I bought this thermometer because I was tired of holding a digital thermometer over a pan of hot oil to check the temperature while frying. Also, I wanted something that could sit in the pot so I could easily see the temperature at all times. This thermometer definitely does that, and it's the perfect size for a Dutch oven type pan or similar size (in height) - I was considering a 12" but am glad I settled on a 6" " have decided. The thermometer is great, easy to read and I love the included clip to hang it on the side of the pot. The clamp isn't the strongest, but you can tighten it by hand or with pliers, and once you put it on the pot you don't have to worry about the thermometer falling off. It was about 10 degrees Fahrenheit too low so I had to recalibrate it, but it was just fine with the nut underneath. Many thermometers need to be calibrated, so this shouldn't come as a surprise and is perfectly normal.
