The thermostat is supposed to switch off when the temperature reaches a certain value. I set the thermostat to 84 degrees. However, during the first two days, the temperature on the digital display reached 86 degrees, and the device itself did not turn off. However, the temp never went above 86 degrees, so I kept it as the device reads the temp and it doesn't get too hot (my snake lives in 75-85 degrees). UPDATE: The seller sent me what turned out to be a "refurbished device" after I posted this review. I tested the device and it works as advertised: the device turns off when it reaches the set temperature. For this reason I have increased my rating to three stars.
