Update 12/03/13: After purchasing the activated carbon filter X6675 MERV16+ I decided to remove the star. The Nordic Pure is a pretty good filter and I can say it picks up a lot of stuff from the air (one thing I've noticed is that older filters tend to get more of a brownish or blackish tinge over time, while this one gets dirtier and greenish is - I think it's a result of UV making the air a little bit cleaner?) Just by the looks and also the air quality. Not sure if this makes a huge difference to the smell, I don't know how effective the charcoal filtered Nordic Pure implementation is. The X6675 has many more folds (larger surface area) and a different (and more common) way of handling the carbon part. First Rating: __________________ I've been using this filter for a couple of weeks now and I feel like I can tell quite a big difference in the overall air quality. My allergies bother me less and I definitely see less dust. I should preface this by mentioning that I replaced my entire HVAC system just prior to installing this filter (the old system only had room for a 1" or 2" filter, I've switched to a 5- Zoll filter upgraded when I installed the new HVAC). so it can also play a role. Also, I had a much more powerful UV flashlight installed than before and the ozone was not producing any light which may or may not help with allergies. My house also seems fresher, but it never smelled bad initially, so it's hard to tell. What is easy to distinguish is the visual aspect of how the filter works! It definitely captures a lot that my previous filter (Filtrete 2400) didn't seem to capture. After a month or two it was almost white (the first one was dirtier) and this one is no longer white. this filter and the one I am considering. Nordic Pure MERV 15 probably had nearly twice as many wrinkles; However, it still adds a bit of airflow resistance. So much so that you can hear the difference between them with the filter housing door closed. My system seems to be able to handle this without too much trouble, but I think some can't. If you decide to go with this level of filtering, I highly recommend starting with one or speaking to your HVAC specialist first. If you find it works fine, go from there. I think next time I will go for MERV 13 + Carbon. I considered MERV 14. I just think it might be a little too much. If MERV 13 isn't working for my allergies, I might switch to it during the crazier times of the year. (Of course most allergens should be removed with MERV 13 or even MERV 12/11, mine is a bit absurd at times). The new big thing is IAQ (Indoor Air Quality), a good filter and UV light are a couple. simple ways to improve air quality. In my situation both are necessary as they would have to remove (disconnect etc.) the entire coil body just to clean it.
