Zebra Finches LOVE this thread! Cut them short first.

George and Gracie in the first photo, Ricky and Lucy in the second. Each laying pair has its own large flight cage. I just bought a new flight cage for George and Gracie as both pairs are nesting for the first time. I'm new to breeding birds so I've done a lot of research on their needs. I've even included hair from our house, COVID-19 haircuts (very popular with both groups of finches), and dryer lint (you read that right). The clean stack also proved extremely popular in both sets. I've also suggested coir (popular) and peat moss (not much. Leave it alone). I thought I might suggest something else. Bought 3 boxes. When I offer nesting material, I offer a very small amount. I don't want them to build. I also take everything apart and cut. I don't want tragic accidents like foot entanglements. I cut the threads 1/2 inch. Out of the box they are about 2 inches long. I just grabbed the bun and immediately cut the bun to about that length. I offered it to each pair and in less than 5 minutes all the birds carried the thread to their nests. It was fun. They looked like they had grown fluffy beards! George and Gracie have 5 eggs. Ricky and Lucy have 3 so far. Gracie also initially had fun scattering the strings while playing. So far I've only used 1/2 cardboard. I'm sure both pairs would have used the entire thread suggested. I highly recommend cutting it first.

Pros
  • Great for a small house
Cons
  • Periodicity
