Review on GEARWRENCH Drive Polish Teardrop Ratchet by Dave Russell

Revainrating 5 out of 5

High quality, smooth action mechanisms that are easy to clean

This is a standard gear wrench in new packaging. They work the same as the old model but instead of being laser engraved with "84 teeth” they are now engraved on the back of each tool along with the new style logo. The ratchet is the same reliable 84-tooth gearing they've used for years and I've never had a break, even after heavy use. The flat head is always welcome, and the forward/reverse switch is easily toggled with your thumb while holding the tool. What I really like about the construction of these ratchets is how smooth they are, yet have just enough flex to the touch to keep them light. They wear out quickly when working on oily or old cars and always look nice with the only signs of wear being small scratches that appear on the chrome finish. All of these ratchets are easily disassembled by removing the round clamp, but depending on use and storage will require many years of use and may never require any real maintenance. Gearwrench almost guarantees them forever, but I've never had to deal with them under warranty, so I'm not sure how the process works. A do-it-yourselfer needs a decent ratchet set in all three sizes, with at least a base set of sockets. They are good enough for professional use and should stand up to everyday wear and tear. Gearwrench may not be on the same level of quality as the much more expensive brands but they are certainly a lot better than any of the big commercial brands and I have always been pleased with their reliability and how their tools are designed to just work when you need them . I have found from time to time that I need 2 ratchets at a time so I am very happy to have this new design as a second set to work with my cars at home as well as projects around the house.

Pros
  • Teardrop base and integrated on/off switch for even better access in hard to reach places
Cons
  • Ugly packaging
