I've used them in QNAP QSW-408 and an unnamed Intel 82599. In both cases they worked without problems. Using a multimode cable can work (ymmv) but is not optimal. Although they are called LR (Long Range), they can be used on both short and long cables if the cable is single mode. and can be controlled by LED-based sfp(+) optics. Yellow cables are typically single mode with a 9 micron core and must be driven by a laser with a wavelength of at least 1310 nm. Due to the high signal frequency and the reduced surface area of the 9 micron cable, single-mode connections can be covered from a few meters to many kilometers. Multimode is much more limited.
