The light from the red dots is brighter and redder than in the photos.
I haven't tried it on foils that I don't need, but I'm always annoyed when such little things end up in drawstring bags! It just makes owning the item that much more fun! As you can see from the picture, the red dot backlight is bright and sharp, which makes presenting much easier! There is also a switch, so if you put it away and accidentally put something heavy on it, it won't turn on the light for a long time and will drain the battery! Unfortunately, the ones I've used before don't have this feature, so I highly recommend this purchase!
