Can't tell if it's locked

When the door is closed I can't tell if it is locked! I have to open the door and look outside. Very frustrating. But I need a lock and I can't send it back and wait. Installation wasn't bad, except that it was very difficult to snap the external handle into place. And there were no instructions to cover it.
