The old style telescopic extension worked well, I've had several of these and now they can be adjusted to any length you want. It has some sort of twist lock mechanism so it either fully extends or closes and as for locking I still haven't figured it out after buying a couple of these to replace with the old ones I had . It looks like you pull it out and then twist to hook a couple of slots in the bar to lock it in place, the plastic computer just keeps spinning. I think I'll take the old knobs off the old ones and put them on the new ones as they still work fine. I don't think I would have bought them had I known they had a new expansion lock. And they may want to update the picture to show it because I checked to make sure they are the same as the ones I had before ordering and after they got here. oh look not the same as the picture ahhh.
