Review on ATP B 453 Automatic Transmission Integrated by Brian Garrett

and these are two things that a smooth shifting automatic transmission like the ZF 8HP70 has in abundance

If you have a 2013 onwards Ram 1500 with an 8HP70 8 speed automatic transmission , you need this! DO NOT listen to your dealer when they say your transmission will never need servicing. I am an ASE certified master technician and have been in the industry for almost 2 decades. THERE IS NO SUCH GEAR FLUID FOR LIFE! It's all oil. These are destroyed over time by heat and pressure, two things that a smooth-shifting automatic transmission like the ZF 8HP70 has in abundance. Did you know that ZF, the manufacturer of the 8HP70, recommends an oil change interval of 60,000-80,000 kilometers or 100,000 kilometers under normal driving conditions? Folks, 100,000 kilometers is 62,000 miles, a few more or less, and if you have a 2013 or 14, you might have already passed it. It's 2015 and I'm right. I ordered one and it fits perfectly. Includes removable filter and gasket. As for the liquid, don't worry, buy the right material. My local Ram dealer didn't even want to do this service. When I told them they would if I wanted to, they gave me an ASTRONOMICAL prize. The Mopar pan and filter are one piece, you can't just replace the filter. My dealer wants it for €698.99. For a Mopar ZF 8/9 Speed ATF (that's transmission fluid) you need about 12 liters to properly service it. They charged $52 a liter. My total price per door should be $1,794 and pennies. Do yourself a favor, buy this, buy ZF Lifeguard 8 fluid here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CJ36ETC/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER and do it it in your driveway. If you're not mechanically inclined, do as I said above and take it to your friendly neighborhood mechanic and have them do it. He will happily do it for an hour or two of work and you will lose $500 for a nearly $1800 service. Whatever you do, don't just service the transmission. You don't want to restore it. The rebuild kit is $4800 then the labor to remove the transmission, rebuild and reinstall is about $2500-$3500 depending on where you go.

Pros
  • Quality construction
Cons
  • I don't really like it, everything is fine
