
I'm a DIY enthusiast so not an expert and I'm always unsure about pilot hole bit size so I'll just guess and use a straight bit smaller than a screw. . I used to buy countersinks but the countersink was too small or too deep and the drill bits were short making them useless for things like deck screws for the pilot hole aspect. The part of the drill is long and tapered, like the screw, so I feel more comfortable making deeper pilot holes. The stop ring is of course adjustable, so you get a good countersink when drilling the pilot hole. That's what all countersinks strive for, but the key is to have a tapered cutter and the right countersink size ratio, and in my opinion that's the thing. They go through the 2x4 like nothing and the deck propeller goes in easily but still securely. They sell replacement bits and I've read reviews of broken bits - probably because they're relatively long for their diameter - but they don't feel weak at all. Time will tell but half of my design and I wish I had gotten them a long time ago. I've looked at more expensive sets but am glad I tried these.
