I bought this to use with firearms and I have to say I'm very impressed. I have used Loctite 242 and it has been very successful, but using it in combination with oily areas on the rifle seems to cause problems. It looks like I'll either have to apply the oil carefully or just never oil the area. Then after reading this, along came this product. The maximum temperature threshold for Loctite 242 is around 200 degrees. With Loctite 243, that's almost twice as much and approaching 360 degrees. In addition, it is really insensitive to the surface when applied. Before I got mad about this product, I decided to test it out in the garage. My favorites are Loctite 242, Rocksett and finally the new 243. I have a scope mount with set screws to tighten. What I did was for each screw, I wiped them completely down with rubbing alcohol and just applied each product. Each product worked as advertised and unscrewing required above average torque to loosen. Then I cleaned everything again and removed everything from the screw. I then applied a light oil to the surface and wiped it off with a towel as best I could so it dries a bit but still has oil on it that you can't see. Both Loctite 242 and Rocksett failed. I was able to unscrew it by hand after 1 week of waiting and it even seemed to come loose before I even tried to unscrew it. Using Loctite 243 it took the same amount of torque to unscrew and it was very tight. It seems to work as advertised. I assume Loctite 243 will fail when it fails due to the heat, but that's expected of firearms. It's impossible to say exactly how hot a firearm can get as it depends on how much you shoot and whatnot. Reading military manuals on the Internet, it turned out that the expected temperature range depends on the location of the barrel. For a rifle, the average temperature near the muzzle is about 400-600 degrees, and this is about 1 shot per second of firing until 60 shots are fired. Of course, this is on the surface of the barrel, and transferring that heat from the barrel to where the set screws are is another matter. It's only a matter of time before that is figured out and I believe if everything is screwed up properly I shouldn't have any problems. Overall I am impressed with this product. It actually works very well and I would highly recommend it to gun enthusiasts looking for something different to lube up. You don't have to go crazy to get oil off a bolt when you're installing what you're installing. However, I still recommend doing this to ensure you have the best app possible. From there, you can apply the oil to your heart's desire without worrying about it coming off. As an aside, another product I'm looking at is Loctite 246. It's the same material as 243, but it's surface insensitive BUT it has a higher temperature threshold. I also noticed that Loctite 246 has an expiration date while Loctite 243 does not. I'm not sure if this has an expiration date, but it's another matter that I'll check for myself.
