Definitely not suitable for a fountain pen!

I was hoping that this paper would work as advertised for fountain pens, but was terribly disappointed. See my comparison photo. At right is one of my "matching" cotton papers from Crown Mills. The article is on the left. I have used most of my fountain pens and various inks on paper. It is obvious that this paper is not suitable for a fountain pen. It looks and feels cool and I have no doubt that it's made of cotton. I've used pen and walnut ink to slightly better effect, but the paper wasn't strong and easily stuck and tore with even the slightest pressure. I think the problem with this paper is that it wasn't sized like many other fountain pen papers. The sizing provides strength to the fibers and helps prevent oversaturation of the fibers with color. Surprisingly, the ink doesn't spread across it, which is typical for non-standard paper. I can try spraying on the sizing medium to see if the paper works better, but it's almost not worth the time as I can buy better paper for a little more. This paper feels and looks good and it worked. ok with ballpoint and gel pen, but I prefer to use fountain pens. I might use it for some drawings or prints, but I'm definitely not going to write on it with fountain pens.

Pros
  • Watercolor paper
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging
