Review on ☕️ Hario Ceramic Coffee Mill - 'Mini-Slim Plus': Compact Manual Coffee Grinder for 24g Capacity by Jeff Bourke

Step back from Mini Slim Plus

I was quite disappointed with this grinder. The people who commented before pointing out that it's inferior to the Plus model were right. In particular, this model has a number of design and manufacturing issues. The sharpener is difficult to dial and there is a ring of scratches (silver on black) on the edge of the basket - these scratches cannot be avoided, this is a design flaw, see below. At first everything rattles and wobbles. Each joint has huge allowances. I used to have a Hario grinder (Skerton Plus) so some stability issues weren't unexpected, but with this 3rd gen I was hoping I wouldn't have to tape the axle over. Oh. Hario solved the problem of stabilizing the outer ridge by wrapping a silicone disc around it, effectively replacing half the popular "tape hack" but the axle fit is still poor. The axle is held at 2 points, both over the ridge - that's a problem. The second issue is how it holds - with fairly thin shims. You could call them plain bearings, but they have a washer thickness and a hole much larger than the axle. This leads to a large freedom of angular movement. I couldn't find any asymmetry in the center ridge, but it still scratches unevenly on the outer ridge on fine adjustments. Second: Adjusting the ground coffee container and black paint. This is engineering sacrificed for design and I must say sacrificed in vain. The lower part overlaps with the upper part. There is an unpainted steel ring on the underside of the upper section - which is good as this area will be badly scratched when the lower section is attached. Here the good news ends. The bottom part goes over this ring which means it will scratch the paint. Lacquer will be damaged even after a few uses no matter how careful you are - read on for why. Perhaps Hario tried to solve the scratching problem by introducing a gap, the inner diameter of the container is much larger than the top. Part. or maybe it's just another fit issue. This doesn't eliminate scratches, but it can reduce them by moving the basket in your hands while sanding. This is bad usability. But that's not all. Check out the locking tab - it's only on one side! This way you are guaranteed to scratch the opposite side of the grinder when you seal the container, especially when trying to achieve a secure seal. To get around this I had to put some pieces of tape on the outside of the top, when the basket is attached the tape acts like a spacer. moves freely between clicks - nothing stops him. This could have been avoided if they had used the recesses in the base that the wheel spins on, rather than the lugs on the wheel clicking onto the lugs on the base. You can see better designs in more expensive hand grinders. Pros: The handle feels comfortable, isn't too heavy, but stays in place when sharpening. Transmits torque evenly to the axle.
