Works well but not great.

While I got what I expected with this model, I don't recommend it unless you're willing to accept the downside. For the money, this is a cheap and easy way to get a working screen, buttons, and battery on a Pi ZW with the Retro version installed, but you're not getting a premium at this price point. The build quality of this T is excellent. The front panel is the only thing that looks good from this whole kit. The black plastic (or metal? I'm not sure) was warped and I couldn't screw the front panel screws in straight, resulting in the screws possibly having to be stripped or screwed in crookedly. I'm kinda scared of disassembling it hoping I can put it back together. The buttons don't stay in place and rotate, which I wasn't really expecting. It doesn't really affect how it works, but it does make it look ugly. That's all well and good for the right side of the controls, but on the left side the lack of a proper rocking D-pad makes it unnatural to use in games. It's serviceable at best and might be good for some games, but it's certainly not ideal for anything that requires quick responses. Much worse, some buttons don't work while the buttons on the left are pressed. I didn't bother to write any down, but as a result I couldn't do fairly common things in the game. It works fine when paired with a controller, so it looks like some sort of case-related hardware or software issue. The screen resolution is also very poor, which is to be expected. However, this is sufficient for low-res games such as GB or GBA, so it doesn't really matter and playing on the Pi Zero isn't much more interesting anyway. Despite the resolution, it actually produces quite bright and colorful images, which was a pleasant surprise. The battery life is around 1-2 hours which is a bit disappointing but not bad. All in all, it's not a bad product, but it's not that useful either. I would buy something else if you want a portable console for playing classic games and maybe don't use a Pi anyway. However, it's certainly a way to make your Pi Zero portable with a working screen, so you can probably come up with some creative ideas on how to use it with a little ingenuity. If all you want to do is play games on the go, I'd look elsewhere.

Pros
  • Consistent test results
Cons
  • Could have gone for a newer model
