Does a great job considering it's just a medium filled tube and a tiny filter about 1/2 inch thick. I used it as a kind of pre-filter for my aquaponic tank because my water parameters were terrible and the tank just wasn't working and reducing nitrite. After putting them in about 2 weeks later the water wasn't that green anymore, the water parameters were perfect, the good bacteria went to town because of nitrite/ammonia and all the fish survived. I love this thing and would recommend it to anyone who wants a low tech tank. Easy to use and easy to clean. The stuff that comes with it does the job, but I'd recommend adding a ceramic filter if that's your main filter. I also suggest buying a 5W air pump. I bought 3 wireless networks before reading the manual. It still works great at 3W, but more power can help suction power. For my setup this wasn't a problem as the grow medium is technically my filter, it's a backup to help with dirty goldfish poop and my pleco which is dirty too. As a bonus, this is fascinating to watch, the media just flows and swirls in air bubbles. it's like an aquarium version of a lava lamp
