This rating is for a Whiteside 3/4 cutter with flush top and bottom bearings (2715). I have a small shop but there are several sets of 1/4 and 1/2 router bits. Whiteside offers superior performance and quality carbide at an affordable price. 3/4 double bearing 1/2 shaft flush is ideal for use with hardwood and hardwood plywood jigs. When I need a perfect fit and don't want to spend the extra time adjusting the router fence 4-10 times to reproduce cuts on the outside edges, that's hit time. For non-hard woods or smaller radius corners I use them 1/2 flush (same ruler). 1/2 is better reserved for removing 1/8th of the material or less. For a perfect fit without stopping when stock removal is less than 1/8" on thick hardwood, I use 1/4 of the top carbide helix. Aside from the 1/4 cut or depth, this will literally be the last 1/4 bit you'll ever buy if you clean it after use. it's literally that good. I've used my 1/4 spiral conditioner almost every day for 5 years to square hardwood and it's still as sharp as the day I bought it.
