Follow the instructions that came with it and the first thing I did was put my new batteries in my B&D watch charger. To my disappointment, the indicator flashed rapidly, meaning "defective". I decided not to give up in the first minute and tried the retractable 9 hour charger. It worked fine. After a few hours on the slow charger, I tried the fast charger again and everything went well. The battery was fully charged in 30 minutes, no errors, no overheating etc. Not sure why they needed an initial slow charge but I'm glad I didn't return the batteries straight away as I assumed they were were defective. Apart from that, the performance was excellent. They definitely last longer than OEM batteries. They fix the instruments perfectly and securely. For example a new tool set.
