The default firmware is fine, the fact that the configuration is split between the web interface and the software utility is pretty bad (especially when managing more than one Cisco Exxxx router becomes; confused). I use this router with a Tomato Shibby 110. Do yourself a favor and upgrade; Even if you don't use advanced features, using the web interface is made much easier. For devices: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks are supported, but NOT AT THE SAME TIME! This means you can take advantage of either 5GHz or 2.4GHz compatibility (to my knowledge, 2.4GHz is required for the iPhone). Gigabit is supported unlike E2500 (newer version of E2000). Wi-Fi signal is weak; This is my main complaint about this router. I also have an E3000 (cascading E2000) and most computers try to connect to the E3000 even if they are next to the E2000. Right now I'm about 30 feet from the router and the signal quality is 12 (noise to signal ratio). My old WRT54GS worked a little better. So: I would say this router is great if you live in a small apartment and want something cheap (used for $20 - great deal - do a hard reset! Google 30/30/30) and this little one You can install custom firmware. If you need something more powerful for a large apartment/house, this is not the best choice. I've heard that some ASUS routers are inexpensive and highly customizable.
