Most of you already know (and have probably tried) this 'trick', but that's all there is to do when that lock is frozen to your trailer or hitch. Just squirt some WD-40 in the keyhole and wait 20 minutes. If possible, turn the lock so the keyhole is up so the grease doesn't spill out while you wait. The tricky part will probably be getting the key all the way in to make it turn. Firmly rock it back and forth until the key is fully seated, then cross your fingers and twist. In my experience with some of these locks, getting the key all the way in will turn the key. If you've made it this far successfully, hopefully the internal lock isn't frozen and will be released. If not, try tapping the lock with a hammer or screwdriver handle. If that doesn't work, try again and let it sit overnight before trying again. I prefer WD-40 for its water-displacing properties, although 3-in-1 or machine oil will also work. And if that doesn't work, it's unfortunately time for the editor. Now my rating. I used to tow and use boats at work almost every week and also used these locks on my personal car and watercraft. The most important thing I can tell you is that these are good locks, but they are NOT weatherproof locks. If the lock is somewhat hidden under the bumper that secures the receiver hitch, then everything will be fine for at least a couple of years. I had one of these on my work truck for over 5 years but it ONLY broke when I finally had to replace the ball joint. I now use plain, regular receiver pins on my receiver and trailer and replace them with these lockable pins whenever I go to a public ramp. I don't boat as much as I used to, and if I did it would be a routine inconvenience. If you boat regularly or use them in an unprotected area, I would suggest lubricating the lock with WD-40 every few months and replacing it every few years. I'm sticking with it because I don't know of a better product and because I've usually had great luck with Master Locks. Your padlock trailer locks will last ten years. I wish this receiver lock was that good.
